HERO High School softball team

The Athletic Department at HERO High School/Samuel Gompers Campus believes that sports are an essential branch of the educational program where student-athletes develop both basic and life skills, learn morals and values, develop character, improve self-discipline, cultivate leadership skills, display sportsmanship, and learn to be part of a team. Participation in athletic teams encourages our students to use their ability to think as individuals but also act as a member of a team.

We view students’ involvement in athletics as a privilege to represent their school, borough, and family, but it is secondary to their graduation from high school. All student-athletes are required to remain in good academic standing as well as attaining a 90% attendance rate. In addition, all must adhere to school, district, and citywide Code of Conduct regulations.

Team Highlights

In 2019-20, the Athletic Department had many individual and team accomplishments. Throughout the fall, winter, and spring, many of our athletes have received citywide recognition.

Our Girls’ Basketball team won the Bronx B Division Championship, ranked #11 in the city, and lost to the #6 team in the quarterfinals of the PSAL citywide playoffs. The previous spring, our Girls’ Softball team was one win away from being a finalist in the PSAL Division C Championship game.

Our Boys’ Baseball team is two years removed from appearing in the PSAL Division B Championship game at MCU Park. Our Boys’ Basketball team competes in Division AA, the highest level of citywide competition.

Our Track team has consistently achieved top 10 performances and has been invited to the Penn Relays numerous times in the past.

Our Athletic Department, coaches, and assistants all share the belief that our student athletes always have a chance to be their best through hard work, discipline, focus, and an indomitable competing spirit that defines our teams, our athletes, and our school.
